Johnny was a little boy who was quick with excuses. One morning when he came to school unprepared (as usual), the teacher asked wearily:  "Well, John, where is your homework assignment this morning?"

"Well, sir, you said yesterday we were to do lesson seventeen."

"Yes?" His teacher sort of agreed, continuing to listen to Johnny’s story.

"Then last night Jimmy told me it was number eighteen we were supposed to do."

"But you didn't bring in either one," the teacher pointed out.

"Well, I was afraid to do the wrong one. What good would that do?”

When we don't want to do something, we seldom have difficulty finding an excuse—often a very plausible one.  But merely having a good excuse does not mean we can neglect duties which are ours.  Remember Johnny’s story as our year “revs up”and we’re asked to volunteer for service to others!

Let’s hope that we may always serve up GOOD WORKS, instead of serving up GOOD EXCUSES.
