Stories
Laurie Cav Passes

It is with sadness that I have to announce that long-time Rotarian Laurie Cavagnaro passed away on May 9, 2020.  Laurie is a Past President of Reading Rotary.  She was 74.

Laurie was retired and split her time between Reading, Hampton Beach and Boca Raton.  She had been the Customer Service Manager at RMLD for many years.  Since retirement, she has been an Honorary Reading Rotarian.

Laurie was full of life, loved to talk and make close friends.  She loved Rotary and was very active in the Reading Community for many years, including the Chamber, Town Meeting and St. Agnes Church in addition to Rotary.

Laurie leaves her very close family, including husband Bob, daughters Chris Kelley (Tim) and Lori Foley (Ken) and grandchildren Betsy, Mary Kate and TJ Kelley and Robert, Allison, Emily and Julia Foley, in addition extended family and numerous dear friends.

Laurie planted the seeds of Rotary in our family.  Husband Bob would bartend at our annual Auction, Chris, Lori and Ken help organize and run the Auction for years.  Her grandchildren help found and run the RMHS Interact Club and were pressed into service at many Rotary events.  Not only was Laurie my mother-in-law, she was my Rotary Sponsor.  Rotary is a family affair in the Cavagnaro-Kelley-Foley clan due largely to her.

Arrangements are through Douglass, Edgerly & Bessom Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be held at a later date to be determined.  Donations in Laurie's memory may be made to DJK Foundation or Reading Rotary Charitable Trust.

Cummings Donation

Reading Rotary is delighted to announce that it recently received a donation of $1,000 from Cummings Properties.  Cummings Community Giving seeks to recognize and support communities of its staff, clients, volunteers and associates.  The gift was made in honor of and at the recommendation of John Bogosian of Reading.  John is a much-appreciated volunteer of the Cummings Foundation.

Bogosian is principal of King & Bishop, leading recruiter and professional service organization focused on staffing, HR consulting and career management services.  John is a Cummings Foundation Committee Chair, serves on the board Of Lahey Health Cancer Institute, is a member of the Special Olympics Massachusetts Board of Directors.  John serves as an honorary board member of Samantha’s Harvest, an organization that works to raise awareness by providing funding for programs and organizations that directly enhance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome.  John is a member of the Council of Armenian Executives.

The donation from Cummings Community Giving is made for use in the areas of the greatest need of Reading Rotary.  During the pandemic, Rotary has been focused on continued support of the Reading Food Pantry and supporting essential workers.

Showing Support for Essential Workers

Reading Rotary has begun placing signs around Reading to encourage those on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19 pandemic.  President Mike Collins said, "It's important to recognize the service of those the health care workers, first responders and essential personnel who are doing so much for the community.  We are also reaching out to the town, schools and clergy to see how our Rotary volunteers can be of service now."

Rotarians are asked to pick up one or more signs to place in their yards, at their works or around Reading.  The signs are at Brian Tobin's office in the foyer (159 Haven Street) while they last.  As of Friday afternoon, there were quite a few left.  If you'd like signs dropped off, please contact Brian or Prez Mike.

Reading Rotary is continuing to work closely with the Reading Food Pantry to help those facing food insecurity during the quarantine.  Rotary makes a weekly run into the Greater Boston Food Bank for the Reading Food Pantry and members are working in outreach to RFP clients.

If you can help with the Food Bank Run, please contact Art Hayden.
